Mitosis
Merit
What is it?
Cell division producing 2 genetically identical daughter cells. Occurs in all somatic cells.
Phases
Prophase → Metaphase → Anaphase → Telophase (PMAT). Each phase has a specific role in separating chromosomes.
Purpose
Growth, tissue repair, and asexual reproduction. Maintains the diploid chromosome number (2n).
Key terms
Diploid
Cell containing two complete sets of chromosomes (2n). Human cells are diploid with 46 chromosomes.
Sister chromatids
Identical copies of a chromosome joined at the centromere, formed during DNA replication in S phase.

Meiosis
Excellence
What is it?
Specialised cell division producing 4 genetically unique haploid gametes. Occurs only in reproductive organs.
Crossing over
During Prophase I, homologous chromosomes exchange segments — this creates genetic variation and is key for Excellence answers.

Cornell summary
Mitosis and meiosis are both forms of cell division but serve different purposes. Mitosis produces 2 identical diploid cells for growth; meiosis produces 4 unique haploid gametes for reproduction. Crossing over during meiosis creates genetic variation essential for evolution.

No API key — AI features disabled
Get your key at console.anthropic.com. Stored locally on this device only — never sent anywhere except directly to Anthropic.
Google Docs — API Key
No key — Add from Google Docs disabled
One-time setup (developer only). In Google Cloud Console: enable the Google Picker API, then create an API key under Credentials and restrict it to that API. Paste it here. Students never see or need this.
Google Cloud Project Number
Required for the Docs import to actually work, not just show the picker — without this, students can browse and select files but the app can't read them. Find this number in Google Cloud Console under Project Settings → Project number (it's a plain number, not your project name or ID).
